Course Description: This course will provide massage therapists with a foundational understanding of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), its role in jaw function, and how dysfunction can manifest in clients. Participants will learn to identify relevant anatomical structures, recognize signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders (TMDs), and adapt massage techniques to support client comfort and well-being.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Describe the basic anatomy of the TMJ, including the bones, ligaments, muscles, and innervation.

Explain the biomechanics of the TMJ and its role in jaw movement.

Identify common signs and symptoms of TMDs, such as pain, clicking, and limited mobility.

Discuss the potential causes of TMDs, including muscular imbalances, stress, and dental issues.

Adapt massage techniques to address areas of tension and discomfort associated with TMDs, focusing on safe and appropriate application within the scope of massage practice.

Develop appropriate communication strategies to educate clients about the TMJ and provide self-care recommendations.
